Gevork Abraamian: HumanRightsTV Intern from Cardiff University
I am an international law student doing my LLM degree at Cardiff University.
Although the main focus in my current studies is a commercial field of law, I have
always been interested in human rights as it is often the case that a lot of people
across the world are unaware of their basic human rights or they have no idea how to
protect them if they are violated.
When thinking about my further education and future career path at school, it
was quite difficult for me to make up my mind. The only thing that I knew for sure
was that I had always wanted to help people, especially those who did not get the
help from others and could not afford paying to get it properly. Fortunately, I decided
to become a lawyer and since then I have never regretted my choice. In the country
where I originally come from the problem of the “seldom heard voice” is a major and
persistent one. This is one of the many reasons lots of people leave their homes and
immigrate to the place where they are better heard, understood and given protection
against violation of their inherent rights.
In order to become aware of importance of protecting human rights the best
option might be to get into the position of those unprotected and vulnerable people.
Once you have witnessed how appalling life can be for those facing any kind of
discrimination based on background, race, religion etc., you will realise the necessity
of human rights, their observation and respect and be likely to get inspired to help
them using any means available to you. Thus, working with HumanRightsTV gives
me an excellent opportunity to own my voice and express myself in the way I want.
I am not sure yet if I will stay in Cardiff on completion of the law degree and
do the Legal Practice Course or go back to my native country but I will do my best to
have as much input into this amazing and rapidly developing project as I can in order
to raise the voice which is seldom heard.
